Law approving university merger published
Message from the Rectors:
This is a particularly important moment in a process which has involved us all collectively. It is especially pleasing to note that the law respects the principals of participation and democratic decision-making that lie at the heart of the two universities, that it stipulates the integration of the University Stadium into the new University, and that it solves pre-existing issues relating to UL and UTL assets.
We would like to thank all those who, over the last few years, have worked to make this happen, from the general councils to the senates, from the faculty working groups, to the researchers, students, and staff.
There will now be a period of around three months for writing, public discussion and approval of the new University's statutes. We ask that you all participate in that debate, helping shape the new "University of Lisbon", created through the merger of Lisbon's two main universities.
In the meantime, we await approval from the Assembly of the Republic on alterations to the Judicial Regime for Higher Education Institutions, granting the new University a legal framework for enhanced autonomy as a public university, in accordance with the preamble of the decree-law. As soon as the statutes are fully approved by the government, the process of electing the General Council will begin, followed by elections to appoint a Rector.
Marking the occasion on which the two general councils will meet with the rectors, constituting a Statutory Assembly, we hereby invite members of the two academic communities to participate in a joint formal opening ceremony for the academic year. The event will take place on Thursday 16th January at 5:00pm in the Aula Magna, University of Lisbon (Campo Grande).
Lisbon, 31st December 2012
António Cruz Serra, Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon
