Today, on the 14th of July, ISEG was informed of the death of its illustrious professor, Professor Dr. Manuel Jacinto Nunes.
This is news that deeply affects the academic community of ISEG.
An ex-student of ISEG (ISCEF), he started his career as a professor in 1948. Jacinto Nunes is recognised for his role in introducing new subjects to the degrees in Economics and Finance in Portugal. He was a director of the University from 1968 to 1970. He retired in 1996.
A renowned expert on the Portuguese economy, who made large and varied contributions to academia, Professor Jacinto Nunes’ life went way beyond his academic career.
He was Chairman of the Science Academy, Minister of Finance (during which time he negotiated and implemented the first stability plan with the IMF), Chairman of the Commission for European Integration, Governor of the Bank of Portugal and Chairman of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos bank.
ISEG shares its profound sadness for the loss of its illustrious professor, and offers its sincerest condolences to his family.
His body will be taken to the Basílica da Estrela at 16.30. The memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, 16th of July at 09.30, after which the funeral will be held at the Prazeres Cemetery.
