In memory of Professor António St. Aubyn

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Professor Antonio St. Aubyn, an ex-professor of ISEG, and father of our colleague Miguel St. Aubyn.

António St. Aubyn was born in 1937 in São Nicolau, Cape Verde, and took his PhD in Mathematics at the Universidade de Coimbra, where he began teaching activity. He also taught at the Faculty of Science, Universidade de Lisboa and later at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Institute of Agronomy), which he was currently Professor Emeritus. He was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mathematics of this University, a member of the Executive Committee of the European Mathematical Society in 1992-94, and Chairman of the Portuguese Mathematical Society from 1990-1994.

Professor Antonio St. Aubyn has been associated with the degree in MAEG since its inception in 1990-91, and he provided a decisive contribution to the definition of its format and content. Up until 2001-2002 he lectured in various topics of this degree.

Right from their first edition, the autumn MAEG Games has included the Antonio St. Aubyn Lecture, in recognition of the importance of his connection with this ISEG degree. At the inaugural edition, the lecture was given by Professor St. Aubyn himself, and since then it has always been given by a mathematician from another university

His teaching and human qualities marked those who were privileged to be his students and leave a pleasant memory for those who worked with him.

His family, through our fellow professor Miguel St. Aubyn, passes on to ISEG its regrets.
