Rules and Guidelines for Normal Epoch (EN) Exam in Economics II

Dear student,

The Normal Epoch (“EN”) exam of Economics II will take place next Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020, at 9:00 am in the same virtual class that we have been using in TEAMS for the theoretical lectures (you should already be a member of that group but I provide the link to our TEAMS channel again below).

The exam will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions (with no negative points given to wrong answers) covering the whole class material posted in TEAMS (and also in Aquila). The exam will last 60 minutes, with 5 additional minutes given for your review of final answers and successful electronic submission. Some questions will have tables and formulae – and we will also provide some formulae needed to solve some of the questions. Since these did not appear well on the screen of some students last time we tested, those tables and formulae will also be available through a link in FORMS at the time of the exam. Since we did not have an Intermediate exam this semester (due to Covid-related developments), the EN exam will represent 100% of the final grade of the normal period.

The exam is individual and consultations to colleagues and to other material than that provided in the exam sheets are not allowed during the exam. Fraud will be taken seriously, as per the guidelines provided by the ISEG presidency this month and distributed to all the students (https://www.iseg.ulisboa.pt/aquila/getFile.do?method=getFile&fileId=1381863). In particular, if fraud is suspected, the exam may be annulled and/or the respective student may be called for an individual oral exam.

The exam will be made available as an assignment to be solved in FORMS and distributed to all students registered in the Economics II TEAMS (https://teams.microsoft.com/l/team/19%3a292e7fc4c4f14286913da80829744610%40thread.tacv2/conversations?groupId=a9441302-0c99-46b1-b044-1a94ef4fbb57&tenantId=9c184083-de20-4859-968c-96f26db0bfe1).

Before the exam, please be sure to comply with the following guidelines:

1)   Verify as soon as possible that your name is in the list of members in the Economics II TEAM for the theoretical classes (see link above). If you don’t see your name in this group (again, this is the group used for theory classes, and not for the practical classes) please contact Luís Catão via chats in TEAMS or via the ISEG email (lcatao@iseg.ulisboa.pt). If you don’t get answer on this matter within 24 hours, it is because your message was not read, in which case please try again.

2)   If you are a student with special education needs (SEN), please contact me as soon as possible and at least 72 hours before the exam.

3)   Go to the default browser and do the logout of other accounts that you might have open and login with your own individual ISEG account. This is to ensure that the exam will be submitted with your own ID, and not the ID of someone else. You need to be authenticated in TEAMS/FORMS with your ISEG account.

4)   Select you browser to either Edge Chromium,  Google Chrome, the old Edge, or Mozilla Firefox. Safari should be avoided.

5)   Have a paper, a pen or pencil, and a calculator next to you to develop and record your solutions and answers, since some questions will require numerical calculations.

6)   Have an adobe acrobat application in your computer to allow you to create a pdf of the exam as a back-up (or use a printer, if you have one, to create a hard copy). Your name should automatically feature on that form. In the unlikely event of a disconnection and failure to submit in FORMS, you may submit a pdf form of that exam with your answers to Luís Catão via chats in TEAMS. I will have my own back-up form required in the Presidency’s message should the whole TEAMS-FORMS channel of communication fails but I am not expecting this to happen.

7)  Look for a place in your home (or wherever you are at the time of the exam) where background noises are minimized and where you can establish a continuous internet connection for the entire 60+ minutes of exam time.

8)   Open your session in TEAMS 10 minutes before the starting time of the exam, i.e. at 8:50 am on Tuesday, June 2, to ensure that connectivity is established and for those doing the supervision of the exam to register your presence.

9)   If you do not receive the exam immediately after 9:00 am on the day of the exam, please send immediately a message to me, Luís Catão, via Chats in TEAMS.

During the Exam, please ensure that:

10)  If you have a camera in the computer (many of you appear to have), please keep it on. Microphones should be also on.

11)  Upon receiving the exam, please create a pdf of the exam or use a printer to print it from FORMS. I suggest you mark your answers in that pdf or on a hard printed version (as well as in the electronic version). This way you will have a back-up for the exam. If there is a disconnection, you can use F5/refresh to re-establish the connection. If you then receive blank exam, it is possible that questions and answers come in a different order, so you can use your pdf or hand notes to map the “new” to the “old” exam template and re-do faster what you had done.

12) No explanations will be given on the questions, so please don’t use your microphone to ask questions;

13) You should receive periodic indications in chats in TEAMS of how much time is left before the end of the exam. Give yourself some time to review all your answers and prepare the submission.

14)  Once you are ready to submit your exam, then just press the button “submit”.

15)   You must receive confirmation that the file(s) has(have) been submitted. If you don’t receive that confirmation please notify me via chats in TEAMS immediately.

16)   In the unlikely event that you have a problem in submitting via the FORMS questionnaire, you can send it as a pdf attachment to Luís Catão via chats in TEAMS. This needs to be done by the time that the exam closes in TEAMS. Only if TEAMS also fails, you can send me an email to lcatao@iseg.ulisboa.pt. This needs to be done of course before the closing of the exam’s time.

17)  If there is a justified technical impediment duly communicated to me that prevent successful submission of the complete exam in time and through the channels stipulated above, the rules from the ISEG presidency (see above the link to that document) contemplate the possibility of an individual oral exam, with a date to be defined. But I hope everyone submits successfully and that oral exams will not be necessary.

Good luck!  LC
