Objectivos

After the Course, the student will be able to:

Analyze and understand the economic behavior of households and individuals in relation to labor supply, human capital investment, choice between work and leisure and consumption.

Analyze the financial decisions of households and individuals in relation to the acquisition of financial assets, liabilities and credit demand.

Familiarize students with data bases (e.g. micro data from Eurostat, ECB, etc..) and some methodologies that enable empirically investigate the behavior of households and their members.

Understand the impact of the behavior of households on macroeconomics and the effects of economic policies (e.g. fiscal policy) in households.

Programa

- Household Economics and Household Finance: main concepts;
- Facts and theories on intrahousehold allocation of resources;
- Labor supply, consumption, leisure and household production;
- Human capital: investing in oneself and one?s family (e.g. children);
- Constructing household financial statements from household surveys;
- Credit demand and over-indebtedness;
- Household/individual portfolio decisions: from normative models to observed behavior.

Metodologia de avaliação

ASSESSMENT:
The final mark can be obtained by 2 ways:(a) only exam and (b)exam + continous assessment. From both alternatives (a) or (b) the *higher mark* is selected.
(a) Only the Exam (Epoca Normal or Epoca Recurso) = 100%
(b) Exam (Epoca Normal or Epoca Recurso) ( 60%) + Continous Evaluation ( 40%)
Continous Evaluation includes: 1 short test (multiple choice 10%) + 1 homework (20%)+ attendance and participation (10%).
NOTE: each class (theory + practice) has a large component of applied economics and the classroom is a computer room. Working with real data from different countries (provided by teacher or/and selected by students after teacher confirmation) and using simple software (to be also learned) will be a constant. More details about assessment and class activities will be provided in the presentation class.
