4.0 (for average grade calculus)

Objectives

To develop communicative competence in English at an upper intermediate level (Common European Framework B2) or higher.

To improve the command of specific technical language in the fields of Economics, Finance and Management.

To foster awareness and auto-correction of common mistakes in English.

To stimulate critical thinking about the themes studied.

Program

The theme for the semester is employment.

In a first phase students will explore the job application process, which will culminate in simulation of a job interview. A second theme will be chosen by students in the first lesson.

Language learning outcomes:
By the end of the course students will be able to do the following in English:
- work collaboratively to analyse and discuss case studies and issues related to the themes studied;
- make short oral presentations on theme-related topics;
- analyse job advertisements and simulate a job interview;
- write job-related correspondence (cv, motivation letter, cover letter, e-mail) in an appropriate register;
- write texts that synthesise information from various sources;
- demonstrate command of technical vocabulary related to the fields of Economics, Finance and Management;
- demonstrate improved awareness and auto-correction of common mistakes in English;
- demonstrate communicative competence at CEF B2 or above.

Methodology: Classes will be interactive and require a high level of student participation. An integrated approach to the four skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing - will be taken, with greater emphasis placed on the production skills. Texts - both oral and written - will be systematically explored for their socio-cultural characteristics and will provide a springboard for oral and written activities. Activities will include individual, pair and group work. Writing and speaking tasks will provide opportunities for individual feedback. Remedial grammar will be tackled on a needs-arise basis.
