In a new international migratory context and after decades of invisibility, Portuguese emigration went back to be the center of attention, due to the exponential growth in the number of departures, since the 2010 decade. However, it is not just about the numbers. The profile of the new Portuguese emigrants is quite different from the profile of the past emigrants and, for that reason, it is important to develop studies that aim to understand this new migratory reality.
Within this framework of thought, the main goal of this dissertation is to understand the process of integration in the labour market of the new Portuguese emigrants. To do so, several factors were tested as determinants of the respective integration process, measured by the average gross income of the emigrants. Their influence on the indicator (positive vs. negative) was also tested. The REMIGR (2013-2015) research project provided the data base for the analysis.
The estimated results revealed that age, gender, qualifications, social capital, years of residence and the official language of the destination country are determinants of the average gross income earned by the emigrants. Regarding the hypothesis, it was proven that being a man, having a tertiary educational level, living for more years in the country of destination and residing in a Portuguese speaking country, positively affects the average gross income earned by those emigrants, leading to conclude that those features act as an enabler of the integration process in the foreign labour market.
