At a moment when politics are increasingly polarised, and unpredicted results at several elections and referendums around the world have intrigued us, it seems the perfect timing to look at how voters are behaving around political brands. This research aims to study the relationship between voters? self-concept and political brands; and how voters use them to maintain and enhance their self-concepts, with an emphasis on the use social media. Its main focus is to probe the congruency between voters? self-concepts and political brands? images. As the symbolic approach is seldom applied in political marketing, an exploratory approach was followed and qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews. This study contributes to political marketing literature, deepening the knowledge on voters outside of election campaign periods and how they get involved with politics through social media. The insights obtained will also be useful to political campaign managers, allowing them to better understand voters and how they make use of social media, an increasingly recurring tool in the political campaigns of the last decade.
