In 2014, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Salazar regime (known as the Estado Novo). The April 1974 revolution and the end of the colonial war triggered major changes both in Portugal and in its former African territories.

Forty years later, this conference aims to stimulate a thought-provoking debate on the following fundamental issues:

1)    Is there a real "Portuguese-speaking area", or is the Portugal/tropics connection merely a figment of the imagination?

2)    What are the main characteristics and trends (whether from an economic, political, social or cultural perspective) which have built the relationship between the various focal points in this space over the past four decades?

3)    Should integration in the Portuguese language area, seen from a regional or global perspective, be on the basis of wanting in or being complementary?

    The conference "Lusophone Space" (1974-2014): Economic and Political Trajectories will take place on 29 ^th-31 ^st May 2014.
