Ensemble Darcos
Ensemble Darcos was created in 2002 by the composer and conductor, Nuno Côrte-Real.
The Ensemble's repertoire aims to play the work of major European chamber music composers such as: Beethoven, Brahms and Debussy, as well as that of Nuno Corte- Real, thus enabling him to express his projects.
In instrumental terms, the Darcos Ensemble varies its composition depending on the programme to be played, from duos to quintets through to the typical 1900's composition of fifteen musicians. To this end, it regularly invites excellent musicians from various parts of the world, amongst them: the cellist Mats Lidström (soloist and teacher at the Royal Academy of London), violinists Giulio Plotinus (director of the Teatro La Fenice orchestra in Venice), Giulio Rovighi (first violin of the Prometheus Italian string quartet), and the violist Ana Bela Chaves, or the acclaimed percussionist Miquel Bernat. It regularly plays vocal programmes for which it has invited some of the best-known Portuguese singers today, among others being: Eduarda Melo, Luís Rodrigues, Dora Rodrigues, Lara Martins, Job Thomas and Sarah Braga Simões.
Since 2006, the Darcos Ensemble has been based at Torres Vedras, Portugal, and it started the DARCOS SEASON in 2008, for a series of chamber music concerts which have received acclaim from some of the best-known Portuguese musicians and musicologists of our time. Its terms of past concerts, we highlight the concerts held in the Magnus room in Berlin in October 2007, the premiere in 2008 of a video by Rui Gato, Margarida Moura Guedes and Ricardo Viana, about the work of the Olivier Messiaen 'Quartet for the End Times', and the recital of the string quintet in C major by Franz Schubert, with the participation of the renowned Swedish cellist Mats Lidström.
In January, 2012, the Darcos Ensemble played Beethoven's triple concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra at the famous church of St. John's, Smith Square, London, directed by Nuno Corte- Real and it has regularly participated in the editions of the Belém Days of Music. In January, 2010, the Darcos Ensemble recorded a series of Cole Porter songs for Portuguese Radio and Television with singers Sónia Alcobaça and Rui Baeta in Lyon, France, in partnership with the Camerata du Rhône.
The VOLUPIA CD was the group's first album, which was and entirely dedicated to the Chamber Music works of Nuno Corte-Real, which was launched in October 2012 by the publisher Numerical.
