{"id":30620,"date":"2022-11-04T15:48:19","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T15:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iseg.ulisboa.pt\/?post_type=event&#038;p=30620"},"modified":"2022-11-04T15:50:35","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T15:50:35","slug":"iseg-research-seminar","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/www.iseg.ulisboa.pt\/en\/event\/iseg-research-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"ISEG Research Seminar | Cousins from Overseas: The Labor Market Impact of a Major Forced Return Migration Shock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 16, Professor <strong>Jo\u00e3o Pereira dos Santos<\/strong> presents at ISEG the study \"Cousins from Overseas: The Labor Market Impact of a Major Forced Return Migration Shock\", carried out together with Lara Bohnet and Susana Peralta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We study the labor market impact of the return of half a million Portuguese due to end of the colonial war in 1974. Both the size and similarity with the native population (almost 80% were Portuguese-born) make this a unique shock. We use census data from 1960 and 1981 to document a decrease in dependent employment of 15% for native males and 62% for females in regions with a higher influx of repatriates. The bulk of the effects is driven by Portuguese-born repatriates.
