On the 13th December, at 19.00, ISEG's CGD Auditorium will host a \u2018Chorinho\u2019 concert of Brazilian music<\/strong>, with the musicians Manoel Cirne<\/strong>on the mandolin, and Augusto Pereira<\/strong>, who plays a 7-string guitar. Both have ties to ISEG - Manoel Cirne recently graduated in Economics from ISEG and Augusto Pereira is a visiting Assistant Professor at ISEG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choro, or chorinho, is a genre of Brazilian popular music that emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the 19th century. It is based on Luso-African-Brazilian types of music, such as \u2018modinha\u2019 and \u2018lundu\u2019, as well as that of the European ballroom dances that arrived in Brazil mainly in the 1840s, namely the polka, the quadrille, the , Scottish dances<\/em>, the mazurka and the waltz, the latter of which has been present in Brazil since the beginning of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choro players often gather in groups, called \u2018rodas de choro\u2019 (Choro circle), which are usually made up of one or more melodic instruments, such as the flute, mandolin or cavaquinho, which play the melody, the 7-string guitar, which forms the harmonic basis of the ensemble, and the pandeiro, which strikes the basic rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concert will feature arrangements for mandolin and 7-string guitar of some traditional choros, as well as lchoros that are not commonly played in a Choro circle, such as pieces by Radam\u00e9s Gnattali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biographies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manoel Cirne - mandolin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born and raised in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil, Manoel started playing the cavaquinho at the age of 8. By the age of 10, he was already attending and playing in the local Choro roda. At 11, he started playing the mandolin, and from then on he started to perform in public. While still a child, he toured the state of Para\u00edba as a choro soloist. At the age of 14, he took part in the recording of the album \"Talentos do Chorinho Paraibano\", where he recorded 3 tracks. At 19, he came to ISEG to study Economics, from where he has recently graduated. In the meantime, he has always been active in Choro circles in Lisbon, continuing to spread and present this musical genre outside Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Augusto Pereira - 7-string guitar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, Augusto began playing music at the age of 9, using the electric double bass as his instrument. Later, at university, where he studied Mathematics, he came across the sophistication and lightness of Brazilian music and switched to the guitar, an instrument characteristic of his country's music. He came to Lisbon to study for his PhD in Mathematics at the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico. In the meantime, he took part in local Choro circles and started organising a weekly Choro circle in the Alfama. After completing his PhD in 2022, he was invited to teach at ISEG as a visiting Assistant Professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
