ISEG is the first Portuguese economics and management school and part of the biggest and more acknowledged university in the country, the Universidade de Lisboa (University of Lisbon), or ULisboa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officially founded in 1911, ISEG\u2019s history goes back to the Aula do Com\u00e9rcio (Commerce Class), created in 1759, by order of the Marquis of Pombal to provide a secondary level education in technical and commercial activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Aula do Com\u00e9rcio evolved into the Escola do Com\u00e9rcio (School of Commerce), or the Commercial Section of the Liceu de Lisboa (Lisbon\u2019s Highschool), later being integrated into the Instituto Industrial de Lisboa (School of Industry of Lisbon) in 1869, which became the Instituto Industrial e Comercial de Lisboa from then onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Instituto Industrial e Comercial de Lisboa gave rise to the foundation of two distinct schools: the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico and the Instituto Superior de Com\u00e9rcio.\nThe latter opened in 1913, with an initial offer of three degrees: Customs, Consular, and Commerce, which were later supplemented by the degree in Finance in 1915.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Instituto Superior de Com\u00e9rcio was integrated into the Universidade T\u00e9cnica de Lisboa (Technical University of Lisbon), changing its name to the Instituto Superior the Ci\u00eancias Econ\u00f3micas e Financeiras (Higher Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences), or ISCEF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The offer was radically changed, with the Customs, Consular, Commerce, and Finance degrees being replaced by degrees in Economics and Finance. As part of the same reform, the PhD in Economics and the PhD in Finance were created, which included a Viva examination to defend the thesis on a subject chosen from among those determined by the School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ISCEF changed its name to Instituto Superior de Economia, as part of a new reform of the degree offer, in which the degree in Finance was replaced by the degree in Organisation and Business Management, which was later revised in 1976 and again in 1986, becoming the degree in Management from that year onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Postgraduate education was initiated, with the advent of the course in Mathematical Methods for Economics and Business Management. In 1981, the Masters in Economics was created and later in 1983, the Masters in Mathematical Methods for Economics and Business Management and in Organisation and Business Management were created, both of which have since changed their denomination respectively to Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management and Management. The PhD in Management was also initiated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the approval of the law on university autonomy, the statutes of the Universidade T\u00e9cnica de Lisboa included changing the name of the Instituto Superior de Economia to ISEG \u2013 Instituto Superior de Economia e Gest\u00e3o. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1990, the degree course in Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management was launched. \nThe degree offer was expanded during the 1990s to include postgraduate courses and the Masters in Accounting, Management, Economics, and Finance and also the PhDs in Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management, Economic and Social History, and Economic and Organisational Sociology were added to the existent PhDs in Economics and Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ISEG\u2019s MBA is accredited by the AMBA \u2013 Association of MBAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ISEG was integrated into the new ULisboa \u2013 Universidade de Lisboa, as a result of the merger between the Technical University of Lisbon and the University of Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The degrees in Management, Economics and Finance started to be taught in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ISEG was awarded AACSB accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISEG has obtained EQUIS accreditation, joining the restricted group of triple crown business schools (EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA), a distinction awarded to less than 1% of business schools worldwide. With this international recognition, ISEG becomes the 130th business school worldwide, confirming the excellence of its academic offer, research, internationalization and impact on society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
