ISEG, in association with GDP – the Parliamentary Sports Group of the Assembly of the Republic is promoting and developing a "Yoga" workshop.

Hatha Yoga is a type of yoga focussed on controlling the mind through the body.

It is carried out by combining a series of exercises which can be categorised in three groups: -asana (posture), pranayama (breathing), yoga nidra (relaxing) and meditation.

  • Asanas – are physical postures which are maintained in syntony with breathing, without mechanical repetition, working on all the muscular systems and are based on correct body alignment.
  • Pranayama – Consists of controlling vital energies through breathing.
  • Meditation – is based on various forms of mind concentration.

Ideally you should bring your own Yoga mat. Several different types can be purchased at varying prices in sports stores.

A pillow, or zafu, is very important for maintaining a sitting position with a straight back.

Clothing should be comfortable, so as not to inhibit body movement and should be made of natural fibre of a light colour preferably.

There is no need to bring special shoes, as Yoga should be carried out barefoot, although you may well want to bring non-slip socks/stockings.
