PRESENTATION:

The Darcos Ensemble was launched in 2002 in Faro, Portugal, by its composer and conductor, N. Côrte-Real. The following musicians make up the quartet, playing respectively the clarinet, violin, viola, cello and piano: Filipe Quaresma, Helder Marques, Reyes Gallardo, Fausto Corneo and Gaël Rassaert. The mission of the Ensemble is to play the chamber music of the great European composers, such as: Beethoven, Brahms or Debussy, and also the music of Nuno Côrte-Real; which is thus copyright. Instrument-wise, the Darcos Ensemble varies their makeup, depending on the programme being presented, from duos to quintets all the way to the typical ’90s makeup of fifteen musicians. To this end, the Ensemble regularly invites top-class musicians from various regions of the globe, highlighting, among others, the cellist Mats Lidström (soloist and professor at the Royal Academy of London), the violinists Giulio Plotinus (concertmaster of the orchestra of the La Fenice theatre in Venice), Giulio Rovighi (first violin of the Prometheus Italian string quartet), or the acclaimed percussionist Miquel Bernat.

Since 2006, the Darcos Ensemble has been based at the town of Torres Vedras, Portugal, and initiated the DARCOS SEASON in 2008, which is a series of chamber music concerts which are commented on by the most relevant Portuguese musicians and musicologists of today. Of their concerts, the most notable have been those at the Magnus Hall in Berlin in October 2007, the debut, in 2008, of a video of Rui Gato, Margarida Moura Guedes and Ricardo Viana, of the work of Olivier Messiaen, the Quartet for the End Times, and the interpretation of the string quintet in C major by Franz Schubert, with the participation of the renowned Swedish cellist, Mats Lidström. In January 2012, the Darcos Ensemble played a triple concert for violin, cello, piano and orchestra by Beethoven, at the famous St. John's church, in Smith Square, London, under the musical directorship of N. Corte-Real; and it also participated in the Music Days in 2008 at the CCB in Lisbon, where they played works of Beethoven and Côrte-Real.

In January 2010, the Darcos Ensemble recorded for Portuguese Radio Television a series of songs by Cole Porter, with the singers Sonia Alcobaça and Rui Baeta, which were then presented in a programme in Lyon, France, in partnership with the Camerata du Rhône. The CD VOLUPIA was the first album of the group, which was entirely dedicated to the chamber music work of Nuno Corte-Real, and it was released in October, 201, by the publisher ‘Numérica’.
