An International Symposium entitled " Writings and the Cinema" will take place on the 28th and 29th of May at ISEG Auditorium 2 (Quelhas buiding).
Bearing in mind that forty years have passed since the independence of the ex-Portuguese colonies in Africa, this symposium aims to reflect about how the "nation" is represented in both writings and the cinema in the following countries: Angola, Cape-Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé e Príncipe.
Furthermore, the session aims to consider the circulation/dissemination/distribution of writings and the cinema in these five countries over the last forty years, and will thus discuss the role of those institutions (cultural, political and economic) involved in the production of written and visual works. To this end, the debate about the role of the Portuguese language will be of great relevance as it is a conduit for economic and cultural circulation and exchange.
The symposium will also divulge some of the results of the research themes under the Projeto NEVIS – Narrativas Escritas e Visuais da Nação Pós-Colonial – (CEsA/FCT), which analyse the role of narrative literature and films in Portuguese-speaking countries as a laboratory, which helps the creation of image-based communities and the projection of new figures of identities, building the research on the theoretical support of past multidisciplinary studies, especially those of the ex-colonies.
