About the Study
This study presents an ethnographic view of three representative functions of the State: political power, in the form of Members of the Assembly of the Republic; judicial power, in the form of magistrates or bailiffs of two higher courts, and; environmental management, carried out by technicians of the Portuguese Environment Agency. The study portrays and analyses the intricacies of the four institutions' functioning, attempting to understand how they work from an interactional, sociotechnical and cultural point of view and the methodology employed is based on intensive fieldwork using participant observation, in an attempt to give priority to those who make the State a concrete and functioning reality.
