What is the Diploma Supplement?
The Diploma Supplement is a written document that complements the diploma and is intended to facilitate the graduate's mobility, as well as to characterize their academic skills and professional competences as accurately as possible.
What the Diploma Supplement is not
It's not a Curriculum Vitae.
It does not replace the original certificate.
It is not a system that automatically guarantees recognition.
What is your structure?
The Diploma Supplement therefore appears as an instrument that enables the objectives described above to be achieved, with a standardized structure, which contains information on the following aspects:
- Identification of the qualification;
- Level of qualification;
- Contents and results obtained (classifications in ECTS Credits);
- Function of the qualification;
- Additional information;
- Authentication of the Supplement;
- Information on the national higher education system.
The Diploma Supplement contains
In accordance with the provisions of Article 1(1) of Ministerial Order 30/2008, of January 10, as well as Article 38(1) of Decree-Law 42/2005, of February 22, the Diploma Supplement must include:
Identification of the qualification holder
- A description of the Portuguese higher education system and how it fits into the education system at the time the diploma was awarded (al. a));
- The characterization of the institution that provided the education and awarded the diploma (al. b));
- The characterization of the training carried out (degree, area, access requirements, normal duration, level) and its objective (al. c));
- The provision of detailed information on the training carried out and the results obtained (al. d)).
The Diploma Supplement may also contain the following information:
- Passing extracurricular units that the student has voluntarily enrolled in during their university attendance;
- Passing curricular units that are not used in the process of completing the cycle from which the student graduated;
- Curricular units that the student has passed outside ISEG, under any mobility plan, be it Erasmus or the one resulting directly from the Bologna process and provided that these curricular units have not been credited in the plan for Attending and Organizing Conferences, Congresses, Lectures, Seminars and other events of an identical nature;
- Attendance and approval of free, intensive, specialization and other courses of this nature at ISEG, as long as they do not confer a degree and are attended while attending the cycle from which you will be or are graduating;
- The performance of managerial functions of an associative nature, whether in the Students' Association or another student group, whatever their nature, as long as they are carried out at ISEG;
- The organization of any other initiative that demonstrates, or helps to demonstrate, competencies or skills that are necessary or useful for the graduate's academic or professional insertion or progression;
- The practice of sports within the scope of events or organizations related to ISEG.
What is the probative value of the Diploma Supplement?
The Diploma Supplement is informative in nature, does not replace the diploma and does not provide proof of ownership of the qualification it confers (article 4 of the Diploma Act). Ordinance 30/2008). Thus, proof of the degree or other information contained therein will have to be provided by other documents: in the case of the degree, by the respective diploma; in the case of other information contained therein (such as participation in conferences, passing a specialization course, etc.), by the respective certificate or diploma.
Who issues the Diploma Supplement
The Diploma Supplement is issued by the higher education institution that confers the degree that the respective diploma attests (in this case, the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão) (article 3 of the Diploma Supplement Law). Ordinance no. 30/2008).
Who receives the Diploma Supplement
A Diploma Supplement is awarded to anyone who has completed a cycle of studies in line with Bologna. Thus, there will be a Diploma Supplement at the end of the 1st Cycle of Studies - Bachelor's Degree, a Diploma Supplement at the end of the 2nd Cycle of Studies - Master's Degree, and a Diploma Supplement at the end of the 3rd Cycle of Studies - Doctorate.
I can ask for certain information to be included in my Diploma Supplement
Yes, in the case of information that is optionally included in the Diploma Supplement, those who wish to have it included should contact the Degree Secretariat to state their intention. Any information eligible for this purpose must be duly substantiated.
Until when can I request the inclusion of certain information in the Diploma Supplement?
The form with the additional information must be handed in at the time of applying for the certificate and diploma, and it is compulsory to hand in all the documentation proving the information declared.
How much does the Diploma Supplement cost
The first copy of the Diploma Supplement is always free of charge.
The Diploma Supplement replaces the Curriculum Vitae
No, the Diploma Supplement does not replace the Curriculum Vitae.
The purpose of the Diploma Supplement is to give an account of the student's activity while attending a particular cycle of studies and, therefore, it will include, in addition to the mandatory subjects, the activities that the graduate attended or carried out within the framework of the institution that awards the degree and issues the diploma. For this reason, there may be facts that graduates wish to show that do not fall within the scope of the Diploma Supplement; in these cases, they can be included in the Curriculum Vitae.
