Assessments and Grading

Dear Students,

We are facing a difficult and challenging environment.

When ISEG decided to suspend lectures, I advised you that, in principle, we would stick to our assessment schedule.

Nowadays we know that midterms are not going to take place.

Consequently, we will have no alternative but to adapt.

Given the impossibility to have our midterm, its weight on the final grade is going to be reassigned to the quizzes that will have a total weight of 35% of the final grade.

Please have in mind that all the other characteristics will be kept:

  • we will take into consideration only the best 3 out of your 4 quizzes;
  • we will not penalize you for wrong answers (wrong answers will be quotes with 0, not with a negative grade, as sometimes happens in multiple choice assessments).

Please note also, that we will try to stick to the assessment structure that is mentioned on the Syllabus and to the corresponding weights.

However, given the uncertainty that we are living in, unfortunately I cannot promise you that for sure it will be able to stick to it.

Given the odd circumstances, only now we have all tutorial (aulas práticas) cohorts in a position to be assessed in what regards chapters 1, 13 and 16 of your textbook.

However, since it is now reasonable to assess your knowledge on those topics, it is highly probable that the first of our four quizzes will take place in one of the next lectures.

This will also be a challenge to all of us, but please be prepared for a short-time multiple choice assessment, in which the number of questions will tend to be higher than what was common in our quizzes (previous terms).

More important than everything else: please keep safe.

Kind regards,

José A. de Azevedo Pereira

Lectures (aulas teóricas) next week (23-27, march, 2020)

Dear Students,

During this week's lectures (Monday, 23 and Tuesday, 24) we will use an Excel file as a learning tool.

Consequently during each class you will need to have access to:

a.      A computer (to work in Excel) to deal with the example that is going to be worked (please dowload before the lecture the corresponding file from the "Examples for Class Discussion" section, in the course website.

b.      Another computer or a tablet or a mobile phone through which to access the lecture in Teams;

c.    A printed version of the example (please print the file "Taxes and Cash Flow", from the "Examples for Class Discussion" section in the course website), in order to allow you to follow the different details of the example during the lecture, without the need to jump between files).

Kind regards,

José Azevedo Pereira

Distance learning lectures and tutorials (measures taken to fight covid 19)

Dear Students,

I think we all agree that we are facing tough and uncertain instances. Consequently, my first thought goes for yourselves and your families: I hope and wish all of you remain fit and healthy.

Giving the extreme measures that were duly taken at the University, we will need to adapt and adjust to a new reality. New and untested solutions will need to be implemented in our course. Consequently, there is a significant chance, that given the lack of preparation for a situation that is such an extreme outlier, some of the procedures that are going to be implemented will not allow us to reach results that are as good as we would like to achieve. Anyway, we will try to adapt as best as we can. I hope you will understand the extreme circumstances and try to help and adapt in order that in the end you will get the technical and scientific content that we were aiming at, when the course started, a few weeks ago.

Given the circumstances, we are not sure that the arrangements for the course will not need to be changed in the future. However, rules and procedures need to be defined straightaway, for all of us to stand a reasonable chance of reaching our goals. Consequently, I would like you to take into consideration the following:

1.      Lectures (Aulas Teóricas):

For the moment, Lectures will take place with the same schedule as previously defined (I am considering other alternatives, but I do not know yet if they are technically feasible), using Microsoft Teams sessions.

Please download the software and, at scheduled times, join the sessions, using your ISEG e-mail adress and password.

2.      Tutorials (Aulas Práticas):

Tutorials will take place with the same schedule as previously defined, using Microsoft Teams sessions.

3.      Assessments and grading:

Until different notice, all the assessments previously defined will be kept with the same weights and probably a different structure, since personal interactions are not expected to take place soon.

Wishing you all the best,

José Azevedo Pereira
