Objectivos

The course offers a general overview of the making of the modern international community, with the rise of the so-called Westphalian State.
It focus on the features of the main actors of the modern international community, namely the general principles guiding the work of international organizations.
Then it concentrates on the role of international organizations in global governance affairs, analyzing the action of the UN Security Council on peace and security issues, as well as the intended reform of this body.
The last part of the course is devoted to the world economic order, stemming from Bretton Wood agreements to the World Trade Organization, as well as new developments in trade negotiations and the challenge of China in the reform of the international system.

Metodologia de avaliação

As for regular period there will be a continuous assessment system, based on three main elements: class participation; written test; and a research paper.
Class attendance is compulsory for regular period purpose. Those who will miss more than 6 lectures will not be considered for continuous assessment.
Repeat period will consist on a written exam.
