All publications displayed in open access are classified according to the Classification Plan of the US Library of Congress.

This plan is alphanumeric from A to Z and has the particularity of synthesizing within each of the subjects, first the Reference and General Works, Congresses and Collective Works. It then summarizes the so-called Text Books (Theories), followed by the applications of the referred subjects.

In the particular case of the ISEG Library, being the main collection of works in the areas of Economics, Finance, Management and related Social Sciences, almost all of the collection is classified as Class H – Social Sciences. A summary of the classification of this class (class H) is presented below.

Does the bibliographic catalog indicate the location of the publication I want?

Yes. After carrying out the search, access the list of results and click on the desired record. The “Copy Copies” table provides information on the number of copies, location, quota (label on the spine of the documents) and publication status.

The quota is an alphanumeric code, consisting of numbers and letters that allows you to locate the book on the shelf.

How to locate the work on the shelf?

The dimension of the works reflects the subject dealt with in the same and the respective color label on the spine:

The shelves are organized in alphanumeric order, starting with A (2nd floor) and ending with Z (3rd floor).

Example:

For works located in “Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão ISEG (iseg)”

Quota: HB171.5.K56 1976

HB171.5.Subject
K56Author
1976Date

First, locate the floor with the letters HB (floor 2). Once the area has been identified, the work is located on the shelf.

At the top of each shelf is a plate with the extreme dimensions (first and last) of that shelf. Once the shelf is identified, just follow the numbering of the subject and author and date. The order is alphabetical and the numbering is ascending.

When dimension is more complex: HC260.S9.E36 1976

HC260.S9Subject
E36Author
1976Date

The procedure is equivalent, the HC is located then, inside the HC the number 260, and then the S9.

For works located at “Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão ISEG-Deposito”, request the work from library staff.

How can I identify publications that are in Deposit?

The documents that are in deposit are identified in the search in the “Exemplars” table, in the “Location” tab.
