Resumo
The development and adoption of remote work was accelerated by Covid-19
pandemic, and it became an alternative to traditional working mode. However, many
leadership studies mainly focused on traditional work settings and lack of exploration in
applicability in remote work environment.
This study explores how to effectively lead under the work from home
environment and what strategies leaders can adopt to excel in remote work settings. Semi
structured interviews were conducted with 6 participants across a diverse industries
background. The participants comprised 5 employees and 1 manager, all of whom have
at least 2 years of remote work experience.
The findings show that (1) managers have to shift from micromanagement to
empowerment leadership in order to build trust through granting autonomy to employees.
(2) Structured communication helps to reduce misunderstanding and increase efficiency
of collaboration. (3) Performance evaluation should focus on outcomes rather than work
hours. (4) Enhance team belonging and social bonds through online or offline activities
can reduce the sense of isolation due to remote work.
The conclusion of this study is that a result-oriented and empowerment approach
improves employees’ motivation and performance. In addition, through reducing
ineffective meetings and organizing activities, enhancing employees’ cohesion and sense
of belonging.
