Abstract:
This paper models interdependent durations as the outcome of a synchronization game, a continuous-time stopping game in which the payoffs of stopping increase when other agents stop. We allow the payoffs to vary with both common shocks and observed and unobserved (to the econonometrician) agents’ characteristics. The common shocks follow a spectrally-negative Lévy process, a semiparametric process that includes Brownian motion as a special case. We extend identification results for univariate mixed hitting-time models to multiple interdependent hitting times and use these results to characterize the empirical content of our games with data on stopping times and covariates. We propose maximum (simulated) likelihood and simulated moment estimators and demonstrate their good performance in Monte Carlo experiments. We advance both multivariate duration analysis and the econometrics of dynamic games, which so far offer few results on this paper’s basic games.

No dia 8 de março, Nagore Iriberri, da Universidade do País Basco, apresenta no ISEG o estudo “Gender Gaps in Access to Medical Intern Positions: The Role of Competition”.

Abstract:
Competitive selection processes may create inefficiencies in the labor market when differences in performance during the selection process are unrelated to differences in performance on the job for which candidates are selected. Using data on the universe of candidates in the highly competitive and high stakes national entry exam into the medical profession in Spain over the past four decades, we first report the evolution of gender differences in exam performance, which translate into important gender gaps as regards the probability of gaining a position (ranging from negative 7% up to positive 9% depending on the period), controlling for individual heterogeneity in ability. We then exploit the large variance in the proportion of available positions with respect to the number of candidates, to show that the observed evolution of gender gaps is compatible with the evolution of the selection process’ competitiveness: the more competitive the process, the higher the underperformance of women compared to men, while when the process shows low competitiveness, women outperform men. Since competitiveness is not a requirement in several professions, planning the number of candidates in coordination with the number of available positions according to the system needs and not other criteria would result in gains of efficiency.

No dia 1 de março, Jose Garcia-Louzao, do Banco Central da Lituânia, apresenta no ISEG o estudo “Employee-Owned Firms and the Careers of Young Workers”.
Abstract:
Using detailed administrative data from Spain, we investigate the impact of having an initial work experience in an employee-owned firm (EOF) versus a conventional business on subsequent earnings. We find that young workers’ exposure to EOFs at the time of labour market entry reduces earnings by about 8% during the first 15 years in the labour market. The selection of individuals with low initial ability in EOFs does not appear to be a relevant channel. Our results seem to be rather related to differences in job mobility and wage returns to experience. On the one hand, we document lower wage returns to experience acquired in EOFs, although no differences in subsequent career progression in terms of promotions. On the other hand, we find that workers who had their first job in EOFs show a strong attachment to such a business model and are less likely to voluntarily leave their employers. Taken together, our findings suggest the existence of non-pecuniary job attributes offered by EOFs that might compensate for lower lifetime earnings.
