Why choose ISEG?

Scientific research carried out at ISEG has been classified as Excellent or Very Good by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and this research plays an important role in the Development Studies programme, which is run between several ISEG research centres: Economics (UECE); Sociology, Human Geography, Political Science and Economics (SOCIUS); Social and Economic History (GHES); Cooperation and Development, especially in Portuguese-speaking countries in the context of African, Asian and Latin American economics (CESA).

History

This is an advanced programme of study designed to impart knowledge and produce original research in the field of Development, in line with the best European universities. With the creation of this PhD, the intention is to look at the changes which have taken place over recent decades and which have led to this scientific area becoming the focus of contemporary debate, as much in economic, social and environmental policy as in academia.

Objectives

The main objective of the programme is to seek excellence in economic and multidisciplinary research into processes of economic, social and political change in Portugal, Europe and the world.

Employment

The knowledge obtained through this doctoral programme can lead to a variety of careers in social economics in the public or private sector, linked to national or international development. This includes teaching and research, management of national and international organisations, consultancy, training, carrying out studies and research projects, journalism, planning, project implementation, conception and evaluation of public policy and of social projects or policy.

Doctors from this programme have gone on to many different careers: leaders, managers and technical specialists within international institutions, public administration, private companies, non-governmental and non-for-profit organisations, consultants, teachers and trainers, researchers, project coordinators and assessors, and so on.
