Gustavo H. B. Franco, former Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, at ISEG

Prof. Gustavo Franco was in Lisbon at the invitation of ISEG, from January 4 to 6, 2010, to sit on the jury of the doctoral thesis "Emerging countries as international investors: The case of Brazilian companies in Portugal", presented by Cristiano Cechella, and supervised by Prof. Gustavo Franco. Prof. Joaquim Ramos Silva.

  • Biography

Gustavo Franco was born in Rio de Janeiro on April 10th.

1956. Married with 4 children, he is currently executive director of Rio Bravo
Investments since its foundation in 2000, responsible for strategy
and strategic investments.

He holds a B.A. (1979) and M.A. (1982) in Economics from PUC/Rio de Janeiro, and an M.A. (1985) and Ph.D. (1986) from Harvard University.

From 1986 to 1993, Gustavo Franco was a professor and researcher at the Economics Department of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.
January, and consultant to various international organizations, government bodies and
federal, state and municipal governments of Rio de Janeiro, as well as of
several national and foreign private companies.

He was President of the Central Bank of Brazil, www.bcb.gov.br/,de August 1997 to January 1999, having spent the previous four years as director of the Central Bank's International Area and Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the Ministry of Finance. During his time in public service, he played a central role in the formulation, operationalization and administration of the Real Plan (1994). He directly led the operation of the markets, international financial negotiations (Brady Plan, agreement with the IMF/98), launches of Republic bonds (16 operations, 10 currencies worth around US$ 10 billion), bank restructurings (PROES, PROER, privatizations) and regulatory aspects specific to central bank activities.

He has participated and is participating in various boards of directors and advisory boards, maintains academic activity at PUC/Rio (lectures and research) and writes regularly for newspapers and magazines. He has published ten books and more than a hundred articles in academic journals.
