ISEG Art Dynamics celebrates its 100th anniversary

Art at school for economists and managers

May 19th to July 9th
ISEG - Higher Institute of Economics and Management
Rua do Quelhas, n.º 6, Lisbon

The Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) celebrates its centenary with art and, from May 19 to July 9, presents ISEG Art Dynamics, an extended artistic project that begins with a cycle of eight solo exhibitions, by established artists and new talents, bringing together a total of 300 unpublished contemporary works, exhibited in close dialog with the history and noble spaces of one of Portugal's largest, oldest and most prestigious university schools.

Is a school for economists and managers also a space for art? The answer is ISEG Art Dynamics, an artistic project launched as part of ISEG's 100th anniversary celebrations, which appropriates multiple spaces in the institution for art. ISEG Art Dynamics explores new features and reveals new spaces for creativity, creates bridges with the outside world and establishes this century-old school as a dynamic platform of reference for the meeting and dissemination of visual arts projects and cultural events.

ISEG Art Dynamics is curated by Nuno Olim Marote who, for this inaugural cycle of exhibitions, challenged a plural selection of eight artists from multiple areas of expression to reflect on the theme of People/Personages and their everyday or revisited representation. Around 300 works of photography, video art, installation, painting and drawing are presented in coexistence with the historical and academic environment, marking through the contents of art a meeting point of cultural multiplicity and heterogeneity of opinions, capable of involving the community and blurring the boundaries between academia and the outside world, an aesthetic orientation that reflects ISEG's own mission.

The first two ISEG Art Dynamics exhibitions will open on May 19 at 7 p.m., with musical performances by Zé Manuel and Joana Lobo Anta. The young photographer Salvador Colaço is exhibiting "BeYourself" at the Colégio do Quelhas, a photographic project of animatic portraits that explores and brings together the multiple facets or personalities of 100 media figures and illustrious strangers. At the Convento das Inglesinhas, the official portrait artist of the Royal House of Monaco, Marcos Marin, is presenting "Reality Bites", a collection of 10 works in which fashion and art icons live side by side with heads of state and political leaders, including a portrait of the President of the Republic and former ISEG student, Aníbal Cavaco Silva.

The second part of the ISEG Art Dynamics exhibition cycle will take place on May 31 at 7pm, with the opening of exhibitions by Gilvan Nunes, João Vilhena, Jorge Rodrigues, Nirvana, Pedro Casqueiro and Susana Guardado. The works are available for sale to the public and all the exhibitions can be visited until July 9, during ISEG's opening hours.

Nuno Olim Marote comments: "From ISEG to the world and from the world to ISEG is the guiding thread of ISEG Art Dynamics, a project that aims to affirm the character of this school through contemporary artistic expression, giving dynamism to its spaces and showing that art exists in all contexts, a place where research is carried out and economics and management are taught, is also a place of creativity and artistic enjoyment."

Prof. Dr. José António Correia Pereirinha, Vice-President for Scientific Affairs at ISEG adds: "It is very clear to all of us that the training of an economist and a manager is only complete if the cultural dimensions that we want to showcase are present. We want them to be visible and experienced by our academic community and by the public who will undoubtedly visit us."
