STUDY SCHOLARSHIP | 2014 Summer Institutes for European Student Leaders Program

Open call for the 2014 Summer Institutes for European Student Leaders program

This year will be dedicated to the following themes:

  • Environmental management
  • Social entrepreneurship

These are two intensive programs, administered by two North American universities, which will last around five weeks during the month of July 2014.

For these programs we will select three Portuguese participants who will have all their expenses covered by a scholarship offered by the US State Department. This scholarship includes transatlantic travel, weekly allowance, accommodation, health and accident insurance, food, books, internal travel and also the issue of a passport, if necessary.

Participants will be housed in the residences of the host universities together with the participants from the other European countries and in other types of accommodation during the study visits.

It is not necessary for candidates to have studied or have in-depth knowledge of the program's subject, but interest will be valued.

For this program we are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

  • Students in higher education, enrolled in the 1st or 2nd year of a degree, i.e. 1st cycle of studies.
  • Exceptionally, students enrolled in the 3rd year of a 4-year degree will be considered.
  • The area of the course is indifferent, as long as the candidate can prove an interest in the area of the program.
  • Be at least 18 years old and no more than 22 years old in July 2014.
  • Have a good level of English.
  • Demonstrate good academic results.
  • Not having visited the USA before.
  • Being mature, responsible, independent and open-minded.
  • Willingness and availability to participate fully in the academic program, attending all sessions, completing assignments and contributing to classroom discussion.
  • Relative advantage will be given to applications from students who are the target of university social action, or who belong to minorities that are underrepresented in higher education, although this factor alone will not be decisive in the final selection.
  • Extra curricular experience will be highly valued.
  • Relative advantage will be given to students who excel academically or otherwise, although this factor alone will not be decisive in the final selection.
