Ageing and pension policy: what future for pensions?

Join us on the 29th May, at 14h00The first lecture of the Cycle of Colloquia on Ageing in Portuguese Society, entitled "Ageing and retirement policy: what future for pensions?", organized by Institute of Ageing.

The session will take place at Sedas Nunes Auditorium, in the Institute of Ageing.
The Institute of Ageing is located at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

Population ageing is clearly a long-term trend in Portuguese society - a trend confirmed in the last population census. However, unlike other societies, at least in terms of its extent, the ageing of the Portuguese population is occurring concomitantly with other social and economic processes that make its evolution worrying and difficult to predict. In parallel with the economic adjustment under way in Portuguese society under the auspices of austerity, there is also a demographic adjustment with perhaps less marked repercussions.

Thus, this lecture aims to propose a reflection and discussion on the financing of the pension system, given both the increasing longevity of the population and the decrease in the ratio between active and non-active people..

It is not only a question of raising the sustainability of the social security system and the measures that may be needed to ensure it, but also of the model on which it is based, paving the way for discussion of alternative solutions and their advantages and risks.
