Call for Papers | 2nd Annual Political Economy Meeting: Democracy, Development, Equality

Venue: Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra
Date: 1-2 February 2019

In the year marking the 45th anniversary of April 25, the 2nd Annual Meeting of Political Economy puts two of the three original D's - democracy and development - at the center of the debate, as well as a new D that may contradict them - inequality. With no systemic rivals on a global scale, contemporary capitalism is marked by growing socio-economic disparities, the spectres of stagnation and democratic impotence. We therefore propose an informed and plural collective reflection on development policies and on the best scales to implement and legitimize them; a reflection on the means, but also on the ends.

It is in this context that the Portuguese Association of Political Economy announces the call for papers for the 2nd Annual Meeting of Political Economy, to be held in Coimbra, at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, with the theme "Democracy, Development, Inequality". The meeting aims to bring together all those who, in the most diverse disciplinary areas, consider that political economy, in its plurality of approaches, can help to deepen knowledge about the complexity of societies, taking into account their "institutional, historical and geographical contexts" and "understanding economic phenomena as being eminently shaped by social, political, legal, cultural, technological and ecological factors" (from the Declaration of Principles).

We welcome papers on the following topics, among others:
- Development: contexts, actors, means and ends
- Democracy, post-democracy and integration
- Inequality, equality and public policies
- The logics of globalization and deglobalization
- Political economy and democratic deliberation
