Professor Bento Murteira passed away

Bento José Ferreira Murteira, jubilated full professor at ISEG, passed away yesterday, July 18, 2018. His body will be today, Thursday, from 6:30 pm at the Church of Santo António do Estoril, followed by a mass at 7:00 pm. The Mass of the present body will take place tomorrow, Friday 20, at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral. Bento Murteira was a remarkable teacher for the development and modernization of our school and for the progress of economics, econometrics, statistics and applied mathematics in Portugal. Student of Bento de Jesus Caraça, disciple and assistant of Professor Leite Pinto since 1947, Bento Murteira directed the teaching of Statistics from 1951, governed the new chair of econometrics from 1953 and left marks, for decades, in the modernization of the teaching of mathematics applied to economics in Portugal. In previous years, statistics and mathematical methods applied to economics were very rudimentary. They were limited to the construction of graphs and the calculation of averages and other descriptive statistics, and methods of estimation and inference typical of mathematical statistics were not developed. Taking advantage of the better mathematical preparation of the students of the then ISCEF, due to the reform of 1949, Bento Murteira radically transformed the study of Statistics, modernized the teaching of econometrics and raised the level and rigor of quantitative studies of economics in our school. This modernization came to infect all schools of Economics and Management in our country. His Probabilities and Statistics, from being a companion sheet to his courses, became the reference manual for statistics in Portugal. Even today, updated and expanded by three of his disciples and collaborators, renamed Introduction to Statistics, they are the reference manual used in our school and in others in our country. Operational Research was another area that Bento Murteira introduced in our country. To him we owe the first lessons on Linear Programming, Game Theory and Decision Theory. In 1953, he obtained his PhD in the study of autoregressive processes under the guidance of Maurice Kendall, one of the great statisticians of the 20th century. He developed an early interest in the study of time series and forecasting, subjects that he promoted in the early 1980s, when such topics were still very little known in our country. At the same time, he introduced the Bayesian perspective in the study of statistics and produced, as was his rule in all the topics he studied and introduced, an excellent and voluminous text introducing this subject. Returning to Descriptive Statistics in the 1990s, he again innovated the teaching of this subject by emphasizing Exploratory Data Analysis, a precursor of contemporary interest in the study of "Big Data". Bento Murteira is one of the rare masters who, for decades and decades, managed to innovate scientifically, and scientifically innovate teaching; one of the rare masters whose influence has spread and is still spreading today in teaching and research.
