Death of Professor Eduardo de Sousa Ferreira

Eduardo de Sousa Ferreira, retired full professor at the University of Lisbon's Higher Institute of Economics and Management, passed away today, July 1, 2019.

 

Sousa Ferreira received his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, and returned to Portugal after the 25th of April 1974. At the time he was recruited as a professor at the then Instituto Superior de Economia, where he founded and served as President of CEDEP, the Center for the Study of Dependence, later renamed the International Economics Research Unit. Sousa Ferreira also served as President of ISEG's Board of Directors.

 

Throughout his academic life, Professor Sousa Ferreira has always been very active, involved in research and teaching activities in his areas of specialization, and has published several books:

- Portugal e o Neocolonialismo: Lisbon: Livraria Sá da Costa Editora, 1975.

- Structures of Dependence. Lisbon: Editorial Initiatives, 1975

- Origens e formas da emigração. Lisbon: Editorial Initiatives, 1976.

- The End of an Era, Portuguese Colonialism in Africa. Lisbon: Sá da Costa Editora, 1977.

- Hermes Revelado, Lições de Comércio Internacional (co-authored by Helena Patacco and Amadeu Paiva). Lisbon: Mc Graw-Hill, 1997.

 

Following his PhD in Heidelberg, Sousa Ferreira always maintained a strong connection to German culture. He has fostered cooperation with German universities and has been involved in the translation into Portuguese of important works by German-speaking economists, including the following two translations, both published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the first in 2006 and the second in 2012:

- National System of Political Economy, by Friedrich List

- Joseph Schumpeter's theory of economic development: a study of corporate profit, capital, credit, interest and the business cycle.

 

After he retired as a retired professor from ISEG, the book was published:

- Under the Sign of Horus - Homage to Eduardo de Sousa Ferreira. Lisbon: Edições Colibri, 2007.

This work, coordinated by Amadeu Paiva, included essays by ISEG professors.

 

Tomorrow, July 2, the body of Sousa Ferreira will be in burning chamber at the Basílica da Estrela, starting at 6:00 pm. The mass will be held the following day, July 3, at 3:00 pm. The cremation ceremony will then take place at the Alto de São João Cemetery, at 5:30 pm.
