Launch of the Book of Former ISEG Student | A Different Look in an Equal World, by Fábio Marques dos Santos

29 May 18:00

Don't miss  launch of the book "Um Olhar Diferente num Mundo Igual", by Fábio Marques dos Santos, former ISEG studentThe event will take place on May 29th at 6pm on the Terrace (Novo Quelhas). Free entry.

"The decision to launch a book was taken shortly after I left ISEG. My book is not and never will be about making me a hero or a villain. Throughout my life, I've come up against some prejudice, with people who, because they realized I had cerebral palsy, questioned my intellectual abilities. Or they made me out to be someone without friends, someone who couldn't lead a normal life, or someone who was protected by their parents or even by society itself. I want my testimony (in the face of my victories and defeats, defects and qualities) to show that, despite our limitations, we are normal beings, no more or less than anyone else. That's why my main goal with my book is to improve Portuguese society's view of physical limitations. For me, it made a lot of sense to present this book at ISEG, because it was here, in my academic home, that I saw that this was possible", Fábio Marques dos Santos

Synopsis

Fábio Marques dos Santos was born with cerebral palsy. An accident during his birth seemed to doom his life. The doctors didn't foresee the seriousness of his injuries. When they went to give his mother Maria José Marques dos Santos information about his medical condition, she predicted his life path: "Doctor, do your best, one day my son will become President of the Republic!"

In this book, Fábio's entire recovery is told in the first person, as well as his journey, which was not always easy, to achieve his main goal: to have a normal life, a life like everyone else without any physical limitations.

A path full of stories, a path full of projects that were lived intensely: a childhood dedicated to his recovery, without the typical children's games; an adolescence surrounded by a group of friends who gave Fábio the basis to live that phase with all the traditional rebelliousness of that era of our lives; a passion for motorsport lived in close proximity to the then President of the Portuguese Motorsport and Karting Federation Luís Pinto de Freitas, with remarkable pro-activity; a university life lived in the midst of a very dynamic and pro-active group, but with some financial sacrifices to complete his course... A job abroad with no family or friends nearby.
