PRESENTATION:

The Ensemble Darcos was created in 2002, in the city of Faro, Portugal, by the composer and conductor N. Côrte-Real. In its base formation, clarinet, violin, viola, cello and piano, it counts with the renowned musicians Filipe Quaresma, Helder Marques, Reyes Gallardo, Fausto Corneo and Gaël Rassaert. The purpose of the Ensemble's repertoire is to interpret the great European chamber music composers, such as Beethoven, Brahms or Debussy, and the music of Nuno Côrte-Real; this relationship gives it the contours of an authors' project. In instrumental terms, the Darcos Ensemble varies its formation according to the program it presents, from duos to quintets, up to the typical ninetieth-century formation of fifteen musicians. To this end, it regularly invites musicians of excellence from various regions of the world, including, among others, cellist Mats Lidström (soloist and professor at the Royal Academy of London), violinists Giulio Plotino (concertmaster of the orchestra of Teatro La Fenice, in Venice), Giulio Rovighi (first violin of the Italian string quartet Prometeo), or the acclaimed percussionist Miquel Bernat.
Since 2006 the Darcos Ensemble has been in residence in Torres Vedras, Portugal, and in 2008 began the TEMPORADA DARCOS, a series of chamber music concerts with commentaries by the most relevant Portuguese musicians and musicologists. From their concert activity, the highlights are the concerts at the Magnus Hall in Berlin, in October 2007, the premiere in 2008 of a video by Rui Gato, Margarida Moura Guedes and Ricardo Viana, about the work of Olivier Messiaen, Quartet for the End of Time, and the interpretation of the string quintet in C major by Franz Schubert, with the participation of the renowned Swedish cellist Mats Lidström. In January 2012, the Darcos Ensemble performed Beethoven's triple concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra, at the famous St. John's Church, Smith Square, in London, with musical direction by N. Côrte-Real; it also participated in the 2008 Music Days, at CCB, Lisbon, performing works by Beethoven and Côrte-Real.
In January 2010, the Ensemble Darcos recorded for Rádio Televisão Portuguesa a series of Cole Porter songs with the singers Sónia Alcobaça and Rui Baeta, a program presented in Lyon, France, in partnership with the Camerata du Rhône. The CD VOLUPIA, the group's first discographic work and entirely dedicated to Nuno Côrte-Real's chamber work, was released in October 2012, by Numérica.
