14:00h | The Mission in the Name of the Welfare State

The global crisis has undermined confidence that existing welfare state networks (especially social security) can protect people from poverty and unemployment, allowing neoliberal rhetoric to question the sustainability and longevity of the welfare state. This is why the progressive left needs to find a response that can, on the one hand, explain the history of impasses, and on the other, demonstrate and concretize its commitment to the agenda of defending the welfare state.

Oriol Bartomeus - Professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona

16:00h | For Trust in Politics

The decline in membership of traditional parties and in citizens' involvement in state affairs are behavioral indicators of people's alienation from politics. In parallel, we see growing support for populist and radical parties which indicate that there is a strong desire for change in the way public policies and institutions are currently operating. It seems that politics applied to the neoliberal TINA logic (there is no alternative!), is forcing societies to look elsewhere for hope. The recent social mobilizations are proof of this trend. If the progressive left aims to restore confidence in the achievement of welfare societies, it needs to find ways to re-engage citizens and decide what kind of alliance it needs to form in order to gain the popular support crucial to governing towards the necessary changes.
