The Chinese government has an extensive foreign direct investment program under way to counter the slowdown in China's domestic market and to use up some of the country's colossal foreign exchange reserves. This programme has some similarities with what Japan did in the 1980s and which led to the internationalization of Japanese companies on an unprecedented scale. In 2014, for the first time, Chinese investment abroad exceeded foreign investment in China. For Portuguese entrepreneurs and administration, a strategy to identify, assess and win Chinese investment is important. However, the challenges are many and lie, to begin with, in cultural differences.

  • What are the economic factors, micro and macro, that drive Chinese state-owned enterprises, private investors and high-income households to seek investment opportunities abroad?
  • What are the cultural differences that should be taken into account to avoid jeopardizing a relationship with a Chinese investor, before, during and after negotiations?
  • What are common negotiating tactics used by Chinese investors, and how should Europeans deal with them?
  •  What is the general profile of the "Laoban" ("Chinese Entrepreneur")? How do they act and make decisions?
  • How should a European company carry out due diligence on a potential Chinese investor?
  • What are the main risks that should be managed and mitigated in advance when considering a relationship with a Chinese investor?
