SEMINAR | Impact of Austerity on Poverty

18 Dec from 09:30 to 09:31
Aud. CGD | Quelhas

This seminar aims to debate the effects of the current economic crisis and the impact of austerity measures on poverty.

PROGRAMME

The following axes will be debated:

  • The consequences for the at-risk-of-poverty rate and the worsening of social inequalities.
  • The effects of austerity measures on the Portuguese population, particularly the most vulnerable.

The current economic climate and the austerity measures in force will have consequences for the at-risk-of-poverty rate and social inequalities. According to a report made available by the European Commission, which compares the distribution of the effects of austerity policies in six countries in the European Union, the measures taken by the Portuguese government, in addition to being unevenly distributed between rich and poor, have increased the risk of poverty, particularly among the elderly and young people. The Brussels Report reveals that "Portugal is the only country with a clearly regressive distribution", i.e. where the poor are paying more than the rich when austerity is applied. The data shows that Portugal is the only country analyzed in which "the percentage of the cut (due to austerity measures) is greater in the two poorest brackets of society than in the rest.
