Wholesale Electricity Market Designs
The growth of generation from non-controllable renewable sources is introducing a series of problems into the electricity markets in terms of system operation and price formation, such as: poor economic signaling of short-term prices, the need to remunerate the capacity of plants with controllable generation and the intensification of long-distance energy exchanges. These problems are currently being experienced in the European Union. Brazil is also facing problems due to the water crisis and the increase in wind power generation, which are causing serious settlement and financial guarantee issues.
These problems indicate the need to revisit wholesale market designs in order to guarantee the huge long-term investments and the balance between electricity demand and supply, which are decisive and fundamental for the economic and social development of modern society.
In these terms, the aim of the workshop is to gather views and analysis from experts in Portugal and Brazil on the financially robust energy trading infrastructure and the most predictable cash flows for agents.
Free admission.
