Doutoramento em Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management

This PhD prepares students to carry research worthy of publication in scientific journals with a strong peer-review system. It aims to develop the skills to devise and implement new mathematical tools and models with applications in the fields of Economics, Management, and Finance.

The teaching and research team of the Programme covers a wide range of fields, including, Actuarial Science, Dynamical Systems, Econometrics, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Finance, Operations Research, Probability and Stochastic Processes, and Statistics and Time Series. On completion of the degree, the graduates are expected to:

  • to be able to carry research work worthy of publication in scientific journals with a strong peer-review system;
  • to be able to present the output of their research work in academic and professional environments.

I believe Quantitative methods, and in particular Operational Research, can provide extremely valuable management decision systems for any organization. Pursuing a new direction in my professional career I decided to return to ISEG and enrol in the MAEG PhD programme looking to enrich and develop my skills in that scientific field. My objective was fully met. From the excellence lecturing faculty, supervisors, teaching and research resources through the material and administrative supporting conditions, the MAEG PhD ISEG programme delivered everything I was expecting. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested.

Programme Details

The PhD Programme in MAEG (Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management) is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to acquire advanced knowledge in branches of Mathematics with applications to Economics or Management, or wish to develop the skills necessary for the design and implementation of mathematical methods and techniques to solve problems in Economics, Management, or Finance.

Employment

This Programme is designed for students who wish to follow an academic or research career, as well as students wishing to pursue a specialist career in industry or regulators, namely in the sectors of Banking, Finance, Insurance, or any other economic activity requiring the use of advanced mathematical models and methods.

Programme Structure

This PhD takes a minimum of three years to complete. The first year consists of coursework, seminars, and preparation, presentation, and viva voce defence of a thesis research project. The remaining time of the Programme is dedicated to research, which culminates in the elaboration and defence of an original research thesis.

The Programme’s teaching and working language is English.
