Message of Condolence | PhD student in Development Studies

Dear Students
Dear Colleagues
Dear employees

I'd always like to send you good news. Unfortunately, not this time. João Parente has passed away. He was a PhD student in Development Studies who joined this program in its 5th edition (2014/15), and whom we all held in high esteem. He stood out for his enormous friendliness and delicacy in his dealings, rigor and seriousness in the work he did. His relationship with the teachers was always marked by immense honesty. I remember many meetings I had with him, which always highlighted these excellent qualities. He would certainly have been a good colleague too. He is no longer with us. I remember the last time I saw him: at the lunch we had on the day of Amélia Valle Flor's doctoral exam. He was no longer well. He got worse. He left.

I think each of us will have our own way of expressing our sorrow. As coordinator of the program to which he devoted so much effort, I will remember his presence by trying to make this doctoral program one of great quality. And where the quality of human relations goes hand in hand with the scientific quality that we all want it to have. I invite all of you, professors and doctoral students, and all the staff who help to make this program work, to join me in this effort.

Warmest regards

José António Pereirinha
Coordinator of the PhD Program in Development Studies
