Death of Professor Antony St. Aubyn

We are saddened to announce the death of Professor António St. Aubyn, a former ISEG lecturer and father of our colleague Miguel St. Aubyn.

António St. Aubyn was born in 1937 in São Nicolau, Cape Verde. He received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Coimbra, where he began his teaching career. He also taught at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and later at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, where he was currently Professor Emeritus. He was Full Professor and Chairman of the Mathematics Department at that Institute, a member of the Executive Committee of the European Mathematical Society in 1992-94 and President of the Portuguese Mathematical Society in 1990-1994.

Professor António St. Aubyn has been associated with the MAEG degree since its inception in 1990-91, having made a decisive contribution to defining its profile. Until 2001-2002 he directed and taught various subjects in the Analysis area of the degree.

Since its first edition, the MAEG Autumn Days have included the Professor António St. Aubyn Lecture, in recognition of the importance of his connection to this ISEG degree. In the inaugural edition, the lecture was given by Professor St. Aubyn himself and, since then, it has been given by a mathematician from another school.

His pedagogical and human qualities marked those who had the privilege of being his students and leave a grateful memory for those who worked with him.

To the family, through our colleague Professor Miguel St. Aubyn, ISEG sends a heartfelt vote of condolence.
