Led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE), the project has 15 other European and African partners, will last five years and is due to start in September 2020.

ISEG's participation is led by researcher and visiting assistant professor Idalina Dias Sardinha (CSG research consortium; Department of Social Sciences). The ISEG team is multidisciplinary and includes colleagues Alexandre Abreu, Amélia Branco, Nuno Crespo, Pedro Verga Matos, Sofia Bento and Rita Queiroga, and will receive funding of 734 thousand euros.

The main objective of this project is to design, implement, test and validate agroecological practices using new technologies to increase the primary productivity and resilience of agricultural systems in North and West Africa. Fieldwork will take place in pilot communities in five African countries - Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger, Egypt, Tunisia. The main beneficiaries are local farmers and entrepreneurs who provide agricultural services or are part of the food value chain.

The ISEG team is the leader of the first workpackage which will carry out the basic analysis of the agricultural systems in the regions and the planned pilots, and the design and follow-up of monitoring throughout the project. It will also participate in the development of community involvement and training methods during the project.
