Reportage | Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Gouveia e Melo, at ISEG in a lecture on Innovation in the Navy

On November 21st, ISEG received the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, who came to deliver a lecture on "Blue Innovation: Strategies of the Portuguese Navy".

In an era of technological hyper-competition and geo-economic readjustment, the need for new institutional vehicles for scientific and technological development arises.

Gouveia e Melo stressed the importance of innovation and the urgency of adapting processes in the face of rapid technological change, illustrating with the process of buying a ship that is too long: "Today, when we buy a ship, we were planning a ship 3 or 4 years, [...], and another 3 or 4 years to manufacture it. 15 years later we get a ship with technology that we discussed 15 years ago. So we start operating a new ship that is already obsolete." Thus, it becomes necessary to incorporate "new ideas, new technologies and new processes" into the organization, argues the Admiral.

The lecture, organized in the format of an "open class" in the scope of the course unit "Science and Economics" of the Master in Economics and Management of Science, Technology and Innovation (EGCTI), brought to ISEG experts in the area of defense policy, industrial research strategy and the promotion of investment and international trade. Besides Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, the session was attended by Commander Gonçalves Simões (Chief of the Network and Information Systems Division of the Navy Staff), and Master Miguel Pinto (Director of idD Portugal Defence and former student of our master's program). The class also included the participation of Professor José Veríssimo, Vice President of ISEG, Professor Manuel Mira Godinho, Coordinator of the Master in EGCTI, and Professor Sandro Mendonça, responsible for the curricular unit "Science and Economics" and who moderated the session.
