Exhibition inauguration | The Narrative is the Others

29 Feb from 18:30 to 20:30
ISEG, Cloisters (Quelhas, Floor 3)

The Painting and Literature Exhibition to be inaugurated on the 29th February at 18.30 is entitled "The Narrative is the Others"by Inês Pargana and Gonçalo M. Tavares.

ISEG's Cultural Commission invites everyone to visit the exhibition, which will run until the 29th April in the Cloisters of the Convento das Inglesinhas (ISEG, Quelhas, Floor 3), with free admission during ISEG's opening hours.

The inspiration behind the paintings of Inês Pargana are the short stories in 'O Senhor Brecht e o Sucesso' (Gonçalo M. Tavares, Relógio d'Água, 2018). In turn, Gonçalo M. Tavares presents a series of unpublished texts, inspired by the artist's paintings. Each work consists of a painting, a complimentary text written on an A2 sheet, and a small A6 open notebook.

This ineffable embrace between literature and painting gave birth to 'A Narrativa São os Outros', an exhibition of 12 works, including 10 paintings in acrylic on linen and a set of 39 portraits in acrylic painted on mirrors with pine frames to which have been added the respective basic and unpublished texts, written purposely for the exhibition.

Sized between 95x137cm and 131x200cm, some of the paintings have the particularity of being interactive, providing the visitor with a sensory and, in some cases, immersive approach.

About the authors:

Inês Pargana has been an artist for as long as she can remember. She never left her sketchbook at home and looked at her surroundings in a way that was all her own. She studied architecture and worked in this profession for a decade. Although content, she realised that she was much happier painting and drawing the many different characters she maintained in her imagination. She followed her dream, gave up architecture and gave "life" to the women who filled his mind, painting them but without revealing the stories behind them. They are not hers. In this feminine universe, full of secrets, she is accompanied by so many people, who follow her on Instagram and participate in the creative process, unveiling, step by step, the story of each character in each work, interacting with some of them as if they were their own. This is a case of art shared between the artist and those who come to see it on display.

Gonçalo M. Tavares is the author of a vast literary repertoire. His work has been translated into several languages and has received important awards, both in Portugal and abroad. The book "Senhor Brecht e o Sucesso", which was published in 2018 by Relógio D'Água, tells several stories that serve as the starting point for this exhibition, which is part of the "O Bairro" collection.
