New Policy on Open Access to Scientific Publications

FCT's New Open Access Policy: More Visibility for Scientific Research

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) announced the implementation of a new open access policy which aims to increase the visibility and impact of the results of publicly funded scientific research. As of February 7, 2025, all scientific publications resulting from FCT funding, including articles, books, book chapters, doctoral theses and master's dissertations, must be made available in open access.

The policy defines three publication channels: The Golden Way (immediate publication in open access), Via Verde (deposit in repositories of the RCAAP network) and Transformative Way (publication in hybrid magazines with transformative agreements). In addition, the retention of copyright and the prohibition of embargo periods ensure that content is accessible to the public without restriction.

This initiative demonstrates FCT's commitment to promoting open science, with the aim of increasing interdisciplinarity, scientific cooperation and the social and economic impact of research. To support researchers, a dedicated portal has been created with detailed guidelines and useful resources.

Why publish in open access?
The new policy reinforces that publicly funded science must be accessible to all, promoting reuse, visibility and scientific advancement, as well as benefiting society as a whole.
