The Accounting group explores traditional and contemporary issues in financial and management accounting, auditing, and taxation.
The group covers a broad range of topics, including financial accounting and reporting, earnings management, disclosure practices, accounting standards and regulation, corporate governance, sustainability and ESG reporting, performance measurement, management control systems, strategic management accounting, organizational decision-making, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, audit quality, auditor independence, corporate tax behavior, and tax policy.
The group draws on a diverse range of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including archival, experimental, case study, survey, and interdisciplinary approaches.
Research is driven by a commitment to understanding how accounting practices, technologies, institutions, and regulations shape organizations and their stakeholders.

Principal investigator - Sofia Lourenco

The Development Studies and Sustainable Transitions group is set for a fundamental rethinking of development in the current times of uncertainty and insecurity, with profound shifts in global relations, inequalities, and forms of exclusion. It is a collective of scholars empowered to inform transformative and structural change, under the recognition of global, climatic, economic, political, and institutional challenges.

The group maintains a dual commitment to advancing Statistics and Econometric Theory, while also applying these advancements to tackle pressing societal challenges. Their work spans a variety of areas, including investment and risk management, financial markets, macroeconomic policy, urban planning, public policy and education, environmental and health economics, as well as demographic changes and their economic implications.

The Finance group conducts applied research that is equally rooted in the core pillars of financial economics, including asset pricing, corporate finance, and risk management, and in the transformative forces redefining the global landscape.

While we maintain a strong foundation in traditional market dynamics, our portfolio extends rigorously into ESG integration, climate financial risk, decentralized finance, and the implications of geopolitical tensions on capital market integration.

Across this entire spectrum, our work is defined by a unified, data-driven methodology that harnesses advanced applied econometrics, quantitative modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to generate actionable insights for both policy and practice in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Human Resources Management and Organizational Behavior group conducts interdisciplinary and applied research, combining scientific excellence with practical relevance for organizations and society. Its researchers produce innovative and internationally recognized knowledge in areas such as people development, leadership, motivation, ethics, performance evaluation, change management, and knowledge management, contributing to the advancement of theory and the improvement of organizational practices.

The group focuses on long-term economic and financial analysis, supported by quantitative archival data on states and markets. History better captures the dynamics of institutional and cultural contexts and the diversity of innovative responses that have emerged in societies, businesses, and economies, while guiding long-term policy and economic decisions.

This research group brings together experts in information systems, operations management, and innovation management. They focus on addressing the significant challenges posed by the rapid evolution of digital technologies, including big data, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, the metaverse, the internet of things, mobile technologies, and blockchain.

The group is dedicated to applied and policy-oriented research, focusing on critical issues within both the Portuguese and European economies, but also delving into global economic issues. These include climate change, corruption, economic freedom, external imbalances, financial-market risk, and fiscal policy. A specialized team delves into theory, methods, and quantitative macroeconomics, producing top-tier scholarly work, which covers topics such as counterfactual macro-epidemiology, estimation, and identification in DSGE models, and income-distribution dynamics.

In Operations Research, the focus is on developing mathematical programming methods and models to support decision-making in complex systems, addressing optimization topics such as transportation, logistics, planning, and resource management, in both deterministic and uncertain contexts.

In Actuarial Science, the research focuses on risk management in insurance, pensions, and healthcare, with an emphasis on longevity risks, the sustainability of social systems, and realistic models for risk sharing and transfer.

In Financial Mathematics, the group studies financial instruments and markets related to sustainability, developing valuation models for assets linked to renewable energy and natural resources.

The group studies the impact of international trade on labour markets, examining how it influences the dissemination of ideas and skills, shaping inequality. The group explores just-in-time trade, investigating its roles in inventory management, networks, and supply chains, and how these shape global economic dynamics. Leveraging on newly available Portuguese admin microdata, like transaction and personal income tax records, the group examines the interplay between firms, intangibles, and customer markets to understand firm dynamics and productivity. In urban economics, the group investigates the broader costs of Portugal's housing affordability crisis, to inform more effective urban policy strategies.

The group explores relevant topics regarding organizations' strategy and marketing considering the individual (consumers, entrepreneurs), social (relationships, interactions), and macro (companies, industries, governments) levels.
