Development Studies Reading Club on African Literatures honors the 50th anniversary of African Independence

CEsA - Center for Studies on Africa and Development (ISEG Research) launched its first book club in March 2025, under the heading Development Studies and under the coordination of researcher Susana Brissos, visiting assistant professor at ISEG - University of Lisbon.

The Development Studies Reading Club on African Literature was born to mark and pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of African Independence. The initial readings were: We, the people of Makulusu, by the Angolan José Luandino Vieira and Sleepwalking Land, by Mozambican Mia Couto.

The next reading is Niketche: A Story of Polygamy(The Last Will and Testament of Mr Napumoceno da Silva Araújo), by Paulina Chiziane (Mozambique). The session will take place on the April 16th, at 17h30 to 19h00, in the Room 209 of the Francesinhas 1 Building.

Participation is free and the discussion will take place in Portuguese.

Synopsis of the book “A Story of Polygamy (Paulina Chiziane)”

Rami, married for twenty years to Tony, a high-ranking police officer, with whom she has several children, discovers that she shares him with several women, with whom he has started other families. Her marriage, with the «paper» and the ring on her finger, turns out to be an ironic drama in which she is only one of the characters. In a feverish search, Rami forces herself to meet «the others». Her husband is a polygamist! In the painful journey that begins, centuries of tradition and customs, the cruelty of life and the abysmal differences in culture between the north and south of the land that is hers, overwhelm her. And only the infinite wisdom that suffering provokes will show her the way through a labyrinth of emotions, revelations, contradictions and dangerous ambiguities. Polygamy and monogamy, what do they mean? Culture, institutionalization, hypocrisy, convenience, convention or the natural condition of being human, within the framework of intelligence and affections? Paulina Chiziane extends Ariadne's thread to us and guides us with the courage, skill and truth of someone who knows the right and wrong sides of the adventure of living life. Niketche, a dance of love and eroticism, is a mirror in which we see ourselves and see ourselves again, but in which, surely, only a few of us will admit to being reflected.
