The 11th edition of the study by Executiva magazine distinguishing the 50 most influential women in Portugal and which, once again, has highlighted three ISEG professors. Professors Sandra Maximiano, Clara Raposo and Sara Falcão Casaca have been distinguished for their impact and leadership in the areas of the economy, regulation and gender equality.
Sandra Maximiano, Professor of Economics at ISEG, was appointed chair of ANACOM in 2023, where she has taken a leading role in the regulation of communications in Portugal.
Clara Raposo is deputy governor of Banco de Portugal since 2022, the second woman to hold this position. Before that, she was Dean of ISEG, the first woman to lead the School, where she promoted a culture of innovation and internationalisation.
Sara Falcão Casaca, a researcher and professor at ISEG, is a national reference in gender studies and equality policies, with an academic and civic career dedicated to promoting equity both at work and in society.
Executive magazine's list also includes three ISEG alumni: Maria Luís Albuquerque, European Commissioner, with a Master's degree in Monetary and Financial Economics; Ana Figueiredo, Chair of Altice Portugal, with a degree in Management; and Ana Garcia Martins, author of “The Sweetest Popcorn”, with a postgraduation in Marketing Management.
This Friday, 22 May, ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics & Management is marking its 115th anniversary with an "Arraial" that promises to once again bring together its entire academic community - students, professors, staff, alumni and partners - in a celebration open to the city and its neighbours in the parish of Estrela.
The event, which has already become a tradition on the ISEG campus, is often described by the community itself as the “first Arraial dos Santos Populares” in Lisbon, anticipating the spirit of the city in June. The ISEG Arraial combines music, gastronomy, conviviality and Lisbon culture in an atmosphere that brings together academic tradition and neighbourhood spirit.
Also known as ISEG's “chic party”, due to the campus's privileged location in the heart of Estrela, the event also stands out for its commitment to more sustainable and responsible practices, seeking to reduce waste, encourage reusable solutions and promote a more conscious and inclusive experience.
More than just an academic festival, the ISEG Arraial is a moment of encounter between generations who graduated from the country's first School of Economics and Management and the city of Lisbon. On a campus with more than a century of history, the initiative reinforces the School's connection to the surrounding community and Lisbon's cultural identity.
This year's edition takes on special significance as part of the celebrations for the 115th anniversary of ISEG, one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious economics and management schools, internationally recognised for its Triple Crown distinction - awarded to less than 1% of the world's business schools. The Arraial takes place on the ISEG campus in Lisbon on 22 May, starting in the late afternoon.

The Effects of Induced Emotions on Leading-by-Example (joint work with Zeyu Qiu)
Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of induced emotions on leading-by example. Using an online sample of more than 1,000 participants, we observe behavior in a one-shot sequential voluntary contribution mechanism game where leaders and followers are induced to be either happy or angry. Our findings show that angry leaders contribute less than happy leaders. The same effect is observed when considering followers’ behavior. A follow-up study uses the strategy method where the leader's actual contribution is not revealed to followers and shows that angry followers behave no differently from happy followers. This suggests that the effect of induced emotions on followers’ behavior operates primarily through the leader's behavior, highlighting the importance of leader emotions in shaping team outcomes. More broadly, our findings highlight the role of emotions as a causal force, suggesting that negative changes in well-being can bring about adverse effects on team cooperation.

In the case of ISEG, these results once again show consistency, ambition and the ability to compete in a very demanding global space, as we have demonstrated in recent years.”
The CWUR ranking of Financial Times evaluates the performance of schools worldwide, taking into account teaching methodologies, the qualifications of teaching staff, the contribution to new skills and learning, and the return on investment for participants. Local Governors as Tax Enforcers (with Giulia Olivero)
Abstract
This paper evaluates the impact of the Certified Warnings Program, a tax enforcement initiative in Italy that enabled municipalities to collaborate with the national tax authority to detect tax evasion. Using data covering the universe of sole proprietors and a difference-in-differences approach, we find that taxpayers in municipalities that adopted the program reported 3% higher taxable income after its introduction. We also document an increase in the probability of being audited and a corresponding reduction in tax evasion. These results hold when we conduct a similar analysis at the aggregate municipality level. Finally, we examine political outcomes for mayors who implemented the program during their first term and find that they were 8.7 percentage points more likely to be reelected, suggesting substantial political returns to local tax enforcement. Overall, our findings highlight the effectiveness of localized tax enforcement in improving tax compliance and its potential role as a political strategy.

ISEG is deeply saddened by the death of José Vitorino, a former student at the then Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras (ISCEF), now ISEG, and one of the most important figures in the public and local life of the Algarve in recent decades.
With a degree in Finance from ISCEF, José Vitorino built a career of strong civic and political intervention, marked by public service, proximity to communities and a vision of regional development that has left a lasting mark on Faro and the Algarve. Throughout his life, he served as a Member of Parliament, Civil Governor of Faro, Secretary of State for Communities and Mayor of Faro. He will also be associated with the process of creating Universidade do Algarve, a contribution of enormous importance to the region and the country.
His career is an exemplary example of what ISEG seeks to cultivate in its students: a solid education in economics, finance and management at the service of society, institutions and local development.
At this time of sadness, ISEG sends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and all those who knew him.
ISEG was deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of our former student Rita Fazenda de Oliveira, at the age of 27.
Rita lived the ISEG spirit to the full. For many of those who met her, ISEG became her first home, a place where she built friendships, memories and a presence impossible to forget.
She actively participated in the academic life of ISEG, where she completed a degree in MAEG. She was a member of associations, volunteered and was a regular presence at events that brought the community together. She was recognised for her contagious energy, the genuine way she cared for others and her rare ability to make days lighter, even in the most difficult times.
Those who knew her remember her easy laughter, her straightforwardness, her commitment to her friends and the intense and genuine way she lived every emotion.
At this time of great sorrow, ISEG extends its deepest condolences to Rita's family, friends and all those who had the privilege of sharing her journey.
