Workshop | Planting of the ISEG Mini-Forest

After the hustle and bustle of the last session - for which we would like to sincerely thank all the participants - we are continuing the work of planting ISEG's mini-forest.

On 10 and 12 March, from 10.00 to 17.00, we are back on the ground to complete this initiative. Participation is simple: just show up on time and join in the planting.

Any help is welcome and makes a difference! It is essential to finish this process before spring arrives, ensuring that the plants have time to root properly before starting their growth, flowering and fruiting cycle.

ISEG ESG Award winners on stage at Web Summit 2025

The winners of the 2025 ISEG ESG Award were on stage at the Web Summit Lisbon, on Thursday, 13 November, at the world's largest innovation and technology event, to share their ideas and reflections on the role of business and academia in building more sustainable cities.

The “Lisboa Sustainable Minds: Shaping a Greener Future for Business - What if companies could shape the future of cities through ESG?”session, moderated by Professor Winnie Picoto, Vice-Dean of ISEG, gave visibility to the talent and vision of the students who represented ISEG at this highly prestigious event.

This moment underlines the importance of the link between academic work in sustainability and its application in the real world, demonstrating how the knowledge produced in universities can support companies and other organisations in responding to the environmental, social and governance challenges that are of unavoidable relevance today. The participation of our students in the Web Summit highlights the real impact of ISEG's research and its contribution to concrete solutions that inspire sustainable transformation.

Special thanks to the students Madalena Santos, Miguel Lopes and Joana Ramos, to Prof. Winnie Picoto, to Gabriel Londe Medeiros, to Maria João, to Nuno Caleia and Paula Alves of the Lisboa Sustentável-Empresas Platform of the Lisbon City Council, and to Pedro Fonseca and Catarina Pedrinho from NTT DATA, great partners thus far, for the involvement and dedication that made this moment of sharing and inspiration possible.

Madalena Pereira dos Santos is the winner of the ISEG ESG Award 2025

We are proud to announce that Madalena Dias Ferreira Pereira dos Santos, of the Master's in Innovation and Research for Sustainability, is the winner of the 2025 ISEG ESG Award.

Her research stands out for addressing one of today's most pressing challenges - energy poverty - by the use of innovative approaches with social impact, linking housing, energy efficiency and sustainability policies.

This year's award, organised by ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics & Management, and sponsored by NTT DATA and Lisbon City Council, underlines the importance of collaboration between academia, the business sector and public institutions for the promotion of the agenda of ESG.

Special thanks to all the students who submitted their work and to the five finalists who presented their inspiring projects at the final pitch session. Each thesis reflected the ISEG community's growing commitment to ESG principles and to building a more sustainable future.

We express our sincere thanks to the selection panel for their time, knowledge and dedication in selecting this year's finalists and winner:

ESG financing: what do banks ask for and how does the SIBS ESG platform simplify it?

This meeting will focus on the role of ESG in the financial sector, the main demands placed on banks and how the SIBS ESG platform can simplify the collection, management and reporting of information - strengthening the link between sustainability, transparency and access to finance.

There will also be space for practical cases, clarification of doubts and debate on the challenges and opportunities for sustainable finance in companies of different sectors and sizes, allowing participants to take with them applied knowledge and practical tools to implement ESG in their organisations.

This meeting, organised by Lisbon City Council, with the support of ISEG, will be moderated by Professor Victor Barros (ISEG).

We are counting on you!

‘Mini-forest expansion’ workshop

The ISEG's Mini-Forest is about to expand onto the land adjacent to the current space. As happened in February 2024, various works will have to be carried out on the land, including pruning, wood cutting, removal of invasive weeds (such as pampas) and general cleaning.

The expansion activity will take place on 16 July, starting at 14.00, and everyone is invited to take part -- in a spirit of collaboration and relaxation, given the expected heat. The meeting will also allow us to get to know the new space better.

We invite you to bring friends and come prepared with water, a hat and comfortable clothes and shoes. As has been our tradition, we'll have a picnic with lemonade! To take part in the workshop sign up on this link.

In addition to the expansion work, regular watering of the mini-forest is still necessary. If you have the possibility to arrange a day, we would be grateful if you could sign up here.

Webinar | Building sustainable economic structures for conservation of biodiversity, addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation in our commonlands. The important role of women

The European project Erasmus+ Wonder Commonlands, of which ISEG is a partner, will hold, on 25, 26 and 30 June, its third webinar. The initiative will be dedicated to the specificities of commonlands as models of community management of natural resources, seeking to reconcile environmental conservation with the lives of the communities that depend upon them.

Several community spaces projects that are led by women will be presented, showing how they have managed to make the most of their resources by generating income, promoting generational renewal and halting depopulation.

Taking these good practices as a starting point, the strengths and weaknesses of the commonlandsapproach will be analysed, with the objective of developing stable economic activities and preparing some initial common proposals on how to regain the involvement of the community -- especially women and young people -- for the use of their resources.

Special attention will be paid to the obstacles women face when making decisions and when directly monitoring the management and use of resources, as well as determining the potential of their more active participation and the need to adapt management to a gender perspective.

Program available on this link.

ISEG hosts Public Value Festival 2025

From 25-27 May, the ISEG Lisbon School of Economics & Management hosted the Public Value Fest 2025, a pioneering event in Europe dedicated to the creation of public value in communities. Organised in partnership with Estrela Parish Council, the festival brought together experts, policymakers, academics and citizens around a common goal: to rethink cities and develop solutions that are more sustainable, inclusive and resilient.

One of the highlights of the event was the bestowing of the Public Value Award on the urban planner Carlos Moreno, creator of the renowned "15-minute city", which has inspired public policies in several cities around the world.

ISEG organised a round table on "Reimagining the Urban Economy", promoting a dialogue between representatives of academia, public administration and the social economy sector. The debate was moderated by Gabriel Londe Medeiros, a visiting professor at ISEG, and included Patricia Melo (associate professor at ISEG and specialist in urban economics), Ana Margarida Figueiredo (General Director for Economy and Innovation at Lisbon City Council) and Gustavo Freitas (Head of Innovation at Casa do Impacto).

This initiative underscores ISEG's commitment to putting the economy at the service of society, actively contributing to the construction of urban policies centred on the common good and the socio-ecological challenges of our time.
