Filipa Duarte de Carvalho - in memoriam
"The news of the death of Professor Filipa Duarte de Carvalho has left us in a state of great sorrow and profound sadness.
There was no forewarning of this event, which occurred suddenly and completely unexpectedly on the 2nd June, which makes her passing even more of a shock.
A graduate in Statistics and Operations Research in 1992 from the Faculty of Sciences of Universidade de Lisboa, she completed her Master's degree in 1995 and her PhD in 2002, both in Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management at the ISEG-School of Economics and Management, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
A member of faculty of the Department of Mathematics at our School since 1993 and an Assistant Professor since 2002, Filipa Duarte de Carvalho still had many years of active service ahead of her.
She published several scientific papers in her area of expertise – Operations Research – and was associated with the Operations Research Centre (CIO) of the Faculty of Sciences, Universidade de Lisboa, and the Centre for Applied Mathematics for Economic and Management Decisions (CEMAPRE) at Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, which is now also part of Universidade de Lisboa, as well as the Portuguese Association of Operational Research (APDIO).
This notice is even more painful for me to bear, as Filipa was my student at the Faculty of Sciences and worked directly with me at ISEG, teaching several course units.
I can testify to her dedication, concern for quality and efficiency in teaching, cooperative spirit, and the overall high professionalism of her performance.
All those who interacted with her – members of faculty, colleagues, students, and non-faculty staff – unanimously attest to the quality, involvement, respect, enthusiasm, methodical approach, and rigour with which she always performed her duties.
She had just completed the first full version of her book entitled 'Mathematical Analysis – with applications for Economics and Management' in January, co-authored with Professor Filipe Oliveira. He informed me how highly satisfied Filipa was with finally finishing this project, which, like many others, had been put on hold during the Pandemic. The publication of this work is imminent.
In effect, this didactic work is a gift to her students, who appreciated her lectures and dedication so much, and who have sent so many messages of condolence. She will also be remembered by them with the fondest of memories.
Her premature departure is a loss deeply felt by all of us.
We extend our most sincere condolences to her family.
Farewell, Filipa!"
