The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) is among the 250 best universities in the world, according to data from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2014from Shanghai Jiaotong University in China, recently released.
The ARWU is considered the most prestigious and recognized ranking in the world, which selects more than 1,200 higher education institutions and publishes the 500 best universities in the world. This year, ULisboa's position in the ranking has risen more than a hundred places, and it is now in the top 201-300. With regard to the evaluation by major areas of knowledge, ULisboa appears in the group of 76-100 best in the area of Engineering/Technology and Computer Science.
The Rector of ULisboa, Professor António Cruz Serra, considers that ULisboa "has a very honorable position this year in the Shanghai ranking, which is the main and most recognized ranking of international universities, with a Portuguese university appearing for the first time in position 200 worldwide", adding that ULisboa is among the 80 best in Europe. ULisboa's "excellent result" in ARWU 2014 is, according to the Rector of ULisboa, essentially related to "the aggregation of all the scientific work and performance of the university as a whole which, for the first time, is evaluated taking into account the merger of the two institutions that gave rise to it: the former University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon".
Only two other Portuguese universities are also included in the 2014 edition of the ARWU, namely the University of Porto (in the 301-400 group) and the University of Coimbra (in the 401-500 range). US universities Harvard and Stanford continue to occupy the top two places in the ranking, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Shanghai ranking is based on four criteria: quality of education (students who have won Nobel prizes or Fields medals), quality of the institution (professors and researchers with Nobel prizes or Fields medals and highly cited researchers), research results (articles published in Nature and Science magazines and cited articles) and size (academic performance ratio).

Portugal and consumer habits under study
During the first half of September, fieldwork is underway for a study on portugality conducted by a team from ISEG, hired for this purpose, on national products and the consumption habits of the Portuguese, as part of the evaluation of the first phase of the "Portugal Sou Eu" Program.
The study aims to help understand which types of products consumers most easily identify with Portugal, the sectors in which differentiation is most relevant to national consumers, their behavioral motivations when it comes to national products and the criteria for demanding the offer.
In the domestic market, the choice of shopping basket has a major impact on the national economy.
The "Portugal Sou Eu" Program aims to increase the perception of Portugueseness in the consumption of products and services that produce added value for the economy and whose production contributes to job creation, to boosting the national market and to balancing the balance of payments, as well as widening the range of products included in a choice that is intended to be increasingly responsible and discerning on the part of consumers.
About "Portugal Sou Eu"
The "Portugal Sou Eu" program was launched in December 2012 by the Portuguese government to improve the competitiveness of Portuguese companies, promote a balance of trade, fight unemployment and contribute to the sustained growth of the economy.
Several public figures from different parts of Portuguese society have already accepted the Ministry of Economy's invitation to be ambassadors for the project, contributing their testimonies and presence at events to publicize the program's economic and social objectives: Carlos Coelho, Carolina Piteira, Cláudia Vieira, Cristina Ferreira, Cuca Roseta, Fernanda Freitas, Fernando Gomes, Henrique Sá Pessoa, João Manzarra, Júlio Magalhães, Justa Nobre, Luís Buchinho and Luís Onofre.
To date, more than 2,000 products have qualified for the "Portugal Sou Eu" label, which together represent an aggregate turnover of more than 1.3 billion euros. The vast majority of products have patents and/or registered trademarks and 73 percent are in the food and drink sector. On the portal
www.portugalsoueu.pt more than 1,000 national companies are registered, whose products are in the process of being qualified.
The initiative is funded by the Compete program and is managed by an operational body made up of the Portuguese Business Association (AEP), the Portuguese Industrial Association - Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AIP-CCI), the Portuguese Farmers' Confederation (CAP) and IAPMEI - Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, IP, which is responsible for coordinating this body.
